Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Data Center Infrastructure Engineer - Specialist in the IT Technology Services department.  

     

 A Data Center Infrastructure Engineer – Specialist is responsible for day to day operation of UCH’s data centers and IT spaces and associated support equipment including HVAC, UPS’S, power distribution units, emergency generators and monitoring the network operations center while working independently with general direction from the Director Data Center Strategy and Operations. 

 

Essential Job Functions  

 

Responsible for overseeing vendors, projects and special assignments as directed 

  • This role works independently from the Manager; need to oversee vendors and be able to identify projects and implement solutions 
  • Has identified and resolved network issues in the hospital and data center 
  • Role identifies, diagnoses, and resolves UPS, HVAC and other vendor problems 

 

Provides highly skilled technical assistance in space, power and cooling planning 

  • The role identifies power distribution configurations to ensure that IT load is properly distributed and balanced 
  • Calculate power requirements for IT equipment expansion as well as categorize to manage the connection 
  • Manages heat rejection requirements in the data center and auxiliary spaces 
  • Identify and diagnose UPS failures 

 

Writes and keeps current the DCIM, complex MOP’s and SOPs for infrastructure maintenance and operation 

  • Step by step detailed outline of operational procedures 
  • Who, what, where and what to do if something goes wrong 
  • Provide a back out plan 
  • Update and keep the DCIM current  
  • Work with developers with system integration and automation for monitoring and alarming  
  • DCIM = Data Center Information Management system 
  • MOP = method of procedure (has to do with maintenance on a system; have vendor work off a system and go step-by-step through the process) 
  • SOP = standard operating procedures (calls out the operation of critical infrastructure equipment; again, line-by-line detail) 

 

Identifies and diagnoses complex problems and factors affecting infrastructure systems 

  • If there is an incident or malfunction, this role must be able to identify what happened, then diagnose and provide a solution 
  • Requires an in-depth understanding of all the data center and telecommunication room infrastructure systems 
  • Coordinates staff and vendors to manage the evolution 

 

Understand theory of operation of all infrastructure equipment and systems 

  • Must understand theory of operation in order to determine if equipment is in normal state or condition 
  • Ability to read and understand one-line diagrams, schematics and blueprints 
  • Ability to instruct subordinates in theory of operation and normal operating conditions 

 

May function in a lead capacity within the department 

  • Ability to lead and direct when needed 
  • Able to work days/nights/weekends/holidays, if needed and/or required 
  • Able to lift heavy equipment/items. 
  • Able to perform all essential job functions, including walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation 

 

Provides guidance and direction for less experienced Infrastructure Engineers 

  • Provides direction to Associates, Intermediates and Seniors 

 

Ability to safely operate generators, UPS’s, HVAC equipment and switchgear 

  • Ability to manually operate all critical infrastructure equipment which would correlate back to understanding of operations (if you don’t understand it, you can’t do it) 
  • Perform high level failure diagnostics and recovery for these systems 
  • Escalate and engage vendors for system recovery 

 

Racks, stacks and provisions servers, switches and cabling in data center and other IT spaces 

  • Runs fiber and coax cross connects, and follows proper termination techniques per data center established processes, procedures and policies 
  • Maintains detailed written records of all work activity 
  • Determines work priorities from the ServiceNow queue and ensures adherence to all commit times  
  • Carries out decommissioning of network servers and switches 

 

Required Qualifications  

  • BS or BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education, training or work experience  
  • Seven or more years of Infrastructure Engineering Ability to translate strategies into clear objectives and practical action plans.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
