Job Description

Join UChicago Medicine, as a Senior Executive Communications Specialist in our Marketing & Communications Department. 

   

Reporting to the Executive Director for Executive and System Communications, the Senior Executive Communications Specialist develops and executes public relations and marketing communications strategies to elevate the reputation, visibility, and thought leadership of UChicago Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division (BSD). This role is focused on high-level storytelling, executive communications, and reputation-enhancing content aligned with enterprise priorities and brand strategy. 

 

A key responsibility for this role is to elevate UChicago Medicine’s reputation and brand visibility by strategically leveraging the voices and platforms of the institution’s top leaders in healthcare, research, and education. The Senior Executive Communications Specialist will shape and amplify thought leadership, institutional messaging, and visibility opportunities for these leaders, helping to position UChicago Medicine and the BSD at the forefront of academic medicine, research, and healthcare innovation. Through strategic storytelling, executive communications, and coordinated media and content strategies, this individual will help translate enterprise priorities into compelling, audience-targeted narratives that strengthen the institution’s influence and public presence. 

 

  

Essential Job Functions 

  • Help develop and implement strategic marketing communications plans to build brand awareness and elevate the reputation of UChicago Medicine and the Biological Sciences Division among local, national, and industry audiences. 
  • Serve as a senior-level writer and content strategist for executive communications, including speeches, scripts, opinion pieces, presentations, talking points, and leadership messages that reflect the voice and vision of key leaders. 
  • Identify and pursue thought leadership and media opportunities for executive visibility. 
  • Support executive and institutional visibility by coordinating and serving as an on-site liaison for media interviews, photo/video shoots, and press opportunities involving subject matter experts and senior leaders. 
  • Develop content across UChicago Medicine’s owned and shared marketing communications channels, including the UChicago Medicine website, content hub, newsletters, and social media. 
  • Maintain and enforce editorial standards to ensure alignment with brand voice, tone, and messaging. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to align storytelling and executive messaging with the enterprise’s Mission, Vision & Values, goals, priorities, and strategic plans. 
  • Measure and evaluate the impact of executive communications and strategic initiatives, reporting outcomes, and recommending adjustments. 
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and process improvement efforts. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, English, journalism, or related field 
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in communications, ten (10) years preferred, with at least some experience supporting executive leadership 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to develop speeches, opinion pieces, and other content that reflects the tone and priorities of C-suite executives 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage executive visibility efforts, including media interviews and public speaking engagements 
  • Familiarity with media relations practices, including supporting on-site interviews or acting as a media escort 
  • Strong collaborator, able to work effectively with creative teams, academic and clinical leaders, and senior administrators 
  • Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with shifting priorities 
  • Knowledge of AP style and fluency in writing for both print and digital formats

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
