Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Laboratory Information System (LIS) Liaison in the Lab Administration department. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) and a bridge between laboratory leadership and LIS team. The LIS liaison will facilitate regular communication, encouraging ongoing collaboration, quick issue resolution, and aligning the technical and operational goals of the laboratory and IT teams. They will have expertise in EPIC Beaker, middleware data management, Lab IT regulatory compliance, and workflow efficiency. As an SME in clinical laboratory operations, the LIS liaison provides technical expertise, guidance, coordination, support, in collaboration with LIS team. Additionally, this role plays a key part in implementing new laboratory test, technologies, system upgrades, and IT-driven process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance. This position is an onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Serves as an information system, process, and middleware subject matter expert within specific laboratory department or cross-functional clinical laboratory areas.
  • Identifies laboratory and clinical needs related to area of subspecialty expertise including projects, new instrument and assay implantations, compliance, and processes.
  • Acts as knowledgeable resource to assist laboratory personnel during training, troubleshooting, or investigation.
  • Resolves technical problems, performs advanced troubleshooting, provides thorough assessment on technical issues and decisions, and evaluate external assistance when necessary.
  • Serve as an expert in laboratory information systems (LIS) and middleware solutions, including system features, best practices, and potential improvements.
  • Utilize organization and project management skills to manage workload and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Performs IT validation and verification testing of all system. Ensure required documentation is completed in compliance with accrediting organization requirements.
  • Stay current with trends in laboratory IT, middleware technologies, and inform laboratory staff of any relevant technological advancements or changes.
  • Work with IT teams to ensure seamless middleware connectivity between diagnostic instruments, LIS, and other hospital IT systems.
  • Manage the configuration, optimization, and maintenance of middleware tools, as applicable to ensure data flow and accuracy across the clinical laboratory.
  • In collaboration with LIS and appropriate internal and external stakeholders troubleshoots and resolve issues related to system, ensuring minimal disruption to laboratory operations.
  • Acts as lead in the development, activation, and implementation of new laboratory information systems and during system upgrades.
  • Completes and tracks assigned projects and tasks in a timely manner with little or no supervision and engages the team in projects.
  • Develop and deliver documentation and training materials related to LIS and middleware operations and best practices.
  • Play a key role in managing expectations from both the laboratory leadership and IT teams.
  • Serves as a communication liaison between internal and external entities including organization IT teams, vendors, and project teams.
  • Ensures projects, changes, and issues are communicated to laboratory leadership in a timely manner.
  • Ensure LIS and laboratory leadership understand the scope of projects and any potential constraints, improving satisfaction, communication, and trust between teams.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years’ experience in the clinical laboratory including working in clinical Laboratory information systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology or other laboratory science (medical technology, biochemistry, chemistry or related scientific field).
  • Certification or eligibility as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or specialist through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), or equivalent.
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 qualification requirements for general supervisor who oversees testing personnel performing high complexity testing.
  • EPIC Beaker CP and/ or AP build certifications required within a year of hire date.  
  • Exceptional organizational skills, ability to work in stress situations, and pay attention to details. 
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment. Fiscal management experience including budget preparations, reporting and financial analysis.
  • High degree of computer literacy, Microsoft office applications, statistical and network applications; Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospitals information systems.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Formal computer or information technology training preferred.
  • ASCP MLS certification preferred.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
