Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Director of Adult and Pediatric Inpatient Pharmacy responsible for directing all operational, professional, and clinical activities for pharmacy operations in the adult and pediatric inpatient hospitals.

 

The Director will be a hands-on and participative manager and be able to work across the UCMC health system.  The Director will develop programs that ensure all pharmacy staff perform duties and responsibilities with the upmost consistency, safety, and excellence in drug distribution and clinical care.

 

Reporting to the Chief Pharmacy Officer, the successful candidate will be a strategic partner for the administrative and financial direction of the adult and pediatric inpatient pharmacy.  The adult inpatient pharmacy represents about 80% of the volume.  The position provides leadership using LEAN process redesign, leads automation and technology improvements, workflow and logistics analysis, cost reduction and control, operations budgeting, and optimizes staffing models.

Who you are:

A collaborative and strategic pharmacy leader with:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy or other advanced degree from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy; MHA or MBA required.
  • Illinois pharmacist license eligibility.
  • 8 years of clinical and operations pharmacy experience from a large teaching hospital or academic medical center.
  • 3 years of pharmacy management or leadership experience.
  • 5 years of adult inpatient or ambulatory hospital experience.
  • Completion of residency at an ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice.
  • Ability to analyze information, present data, and draw conclusions by applying analysis techniques, using data to drive positive performance.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Prior experience managing large projects and working effectively in multidisciplinary groups.
  • Proven ability to lead change, organize teams, and delegate effectively.

 

What you’ll do as Director of Adult and Pediatric Inpatient Pharmacy at UChicago Medicine:

  • Assist the Chief Pharmacy Officer establish the strategic plan for department services, including short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Collect and analyze feedback on the effectiveness of inpatient pharmacy services, including all issues of medication safety.
  • Develop, interpret, review, and enforce hospital and departmental policies and procedures; assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations (e.g. FDA, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission).
  • Effectively set and maintain standards for a safe, efficient, organized work environment that results in exemplary adult pharmacy services to serve as a training environment for residents and students.
  • Confer with the Pharmacy IT Department to develop informatics solutions for pharmacy information management systems, patient and department modifications, and inventory control.
  • Provide oversight and direction for all adult and pediatric operational services, including an expectation of being in the operations environment a minimum of 8 hours per week.
  • Develop and justify new pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care.
  • Supervise pharmacists, technicians, and other support personnel in the performance of all duties. Oversee and coordinate daily operations.
  • Allocate staff time to assigned activities. Coordinate the hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluation process, scheduling, and disciplinary action process for all direct reports. Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of payroll records for pharmacy staff.
  • Lead operational and clinical activities to improve pharmacy impact, including improved workflows, the advancement of patient outcomes, and the reduction of waste.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
