The Medical Surgical Nurse Educator will partner with the Med/Surg leadership team to assess learning needs and provide nursing education based on current evidence and best practices. This role will focus on providing education to behavioral health staff, as well as inpatient medical/surgical department staff on care plans. In this role, they will also participate in the planning and presentation of new employee orientation, nurse residency, annual clinical competencies, and other classroom based education offerings.
With the leadership of the Director/Manager, Patient Care Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor and the Medical Staff, the Med/Surg Nurse Educator will partner with nurses at all levels and across the system to improve performance and clinical quality outcomes. The Educator assesses learning needs of nursing staff; plans, develops, and implements programs to meet identified learning needs; conducts systematic studies and benchmarking activities; evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities; utilizes interactive processes in providing educational services which will contribute to exceeding the expectations of patients, physicians, families/significant others, and third party payers in the provision of high quality, cost-effective nursing services.
Essential Job Functions
- Plans, implements, and evaluates educational activities based on identified learning needs
- Develops an annual nursing education plan
- Responsible for meeting staff education requirements of regulatory agencies and participation in orientation programs and the extern program
- Participates in establishing and implementing policies, procedures, standards, and processes
- Works directly with all nursing clinical areas on monitoring and tracking data, action planning, projects, quality outcomes and quality improvement
- Engages with nurses at all levels to change/modify nursing practice related to nursing-sensitive indicators, core measures, and meaningful use to improve patient outcomes
- Facilitates data collection in accordance with established protocols and guidelines to ensure accuracy for data submission
- Reviews and analyzes reports designed to monitor ongoing performance, identifies and reviews non-compliant cases and follows up with appropriate nursing leader to proactively drive compliance
- Uses data to drive outcomes and improvements. Generates and uses scorecards, graphs, and reports to communicate performance for designated units
- Participates in Quality and Performance Improvement projects, as assigned. Actively engages in nursing focused Quality meetings and Shared Governance
- Participates on committees and patient safety and accreditation/regulatory compliance activities, as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
BSN
- Illinois RN License
3 – 5 years recent clinical experience
Excellent organizational skills, computer skills, and interpersonal skills
Experience with data analysis, interpretation, and presentations
- Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
Preferred Qualifications
National Nursing Board Certification
- MSN
Experience with quality process improvement, and/or Lean methodology
Experience in Med/Surg
