Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Neurological Surgery Monitoring Technologist in the Neurophysiology Department.

 

Sign-on Bonus up to $5,000

 

The Neurological Surgery Monitoring Technologist is responsible for the preparation of patients, collection of information pertinent to the test, performance of the specified study and interpretation of the recording for the purpose of informing the physician of critical problems. Neurological Surgery Monitoring Technologist monitors patients in the operating room suite during complex procedures or whenever the central nervous system is at risk. This includes, but is not limited to, procedures such as: carotid endarterectomy, spinal or spinal cord surgery, brain mapping and motor evoked potentials.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Explains procedures to adult patients and applies electrodes according to the 10/20 system in the pre-operative area. If needle electrodes are being used, they will be applied once patient is anesthetized. (All children are hooked-up once anesthetized).
  • Obtains a complex history from the patient's chart or referring physician.
  • Is able to decide which test or monitoring procedure is appropriate for surgical procedure.
  • Performs pre-operative testing at the request of the surgeon, as well as performs routine studies in the NP laboratory.
  • Performs intraoperative electrophysiological studies of the central and/or peripheral nervous system (SSEP, EEG, MEP, EMG, BAEP) with minimal or no assistance.
  • Precise decision making skills are required for interpretation of the data for the purpose of informing the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of potential neural injury, biological or technical issues.
  • Ensures the efficiency of the patient monitoring by interacting with the anesthesiologist to monitor the type and level of anesthetic agents used.
  • Assists the surgeon with implantation of deep brain stimulator by mapping brain structures.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in good operating condition; detects instrument malfunctions and notifies Clinical Engineering and/or Director of Operations of any problems.
  • Participates in research projects involving brain function including presentation of data at meetings/conferences
  • Assures that accurate billing information is provided to the Operations Supervisor within two business days

Neurological Surgery Monitoring Technologist Required Qualifications

  • Registration by the American Society of Electroencephalographic Technology
  • 4 years experience of independently monitoring neurological function in the operating room or Bachelor’s degree in physical or biological science with 2 years experience in the operating room or Ph.D. with a background in Neurophysiology
  • CNIM certification or an ABNM diplomat is desired and may be a future requirement if employment is secured

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
