Job Description

Join University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for our Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Consult Position.

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $10,000

Eligible for Relocation Assistance

The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical nursing specialist support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice.

The Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Consult APP will cover Monday-Friday 8-hour day shifts (8-4:30pm). The APP will start each shift by reviewing the Hospitalists’ list of hematology/oncology consults with the hematology/oncology fellow and determine if any consults are more appropriate for a fellow to see for learning opportunities. Thereafter, the APP will see both new and follow-up consults, with the opportunity to staff more complex consults with the inpatient Chemotherapy Service attending. The APP will attend the Hospitalists’ multidisciplinary rounds to collaborate on dispo planning in light of any hematology/oncology-specific needs of the patients. The consult APP will staff and bill for visits independently. The consult APP will also be trained to perform bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures in case either procedure is needed in the work-up of the inpatient consults. If patients need to be transferred to another service, the consult APP will help facilitate the transfer by working directly with the other inpatient services. The consult APP will also collaborate with patients’ outpatient primary oncologists and ensure any oncology-specific needs are well-managed.

*There is an opportunity to transition to 4 10-hour days with some Saturdays in the future if additional APPs are hired to support consults.

Advantages of this position include a high level of autonomy in a specialized setting within an academic medical center, the opportunity to manage a broad variety of hematology/oncology patients and oncologic complications, and a collaborative work environment partnering with a fellow, an attending, and other inpatient APPs.
