Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as a Staff Nurse in the Emergency Room Float Team department. Comer Emergency Department is a 21-bed, Level 1 Pediatric Academic Trauma Center dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to the children of South Side of Chicago and beyond. With 2 trauma bays, 1 special procedures room and a dedicated resuscitation bay, we are equipped to handle the most critical situations. The Adult Emergency Department consists of 55 patient care rooms including a rapid assessment unit, six trauma/resuscitation suites and separate rooms for infection isolation, care of immune compromised patients, and psychiatric consultations. In the general care area, 45 rooms are fully equipped with critical care monitoring capabilities. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision. 

 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs.
  • Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients.
  • Provides input into the development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager.
  • Uses care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care. Delegates as appropriate based on patient needs and competencies of staff.
  • Competently performs patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty, as documented by the respective clinical skills inventory evaluation and completion of competency days.
  • Evaluates care given and adjusts plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient.
  • Documents appropriately in patient care records.
  • Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders, utilizing professional knowledge base to assure patient safety.
  • Works collaboratively with other patient care and multidisciplinary team members to provide patient centered care.
  • Documents or ensures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies.
  • Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home.
  • Provides cost-effective care by appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel.
  • Evaluates patient care interventions and collaborates with all team members to make changes as necessary.
  • Initiates and/or participates in patient care conferences.
  • Assumes the responsibility to interact on a consistent basis with the patient and family providing coordination of the plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager.
  • Promotes, has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical, psychosocial and developmental needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or higher
  • Current Illinois RN license
  • Active BLS Certification
  • SANE - AA or SANE - P Certification: must be enrolled within 6 months of employment (18 months for new grad RNs). Obtaining and maintaining SANE certification within this role is a condition of employment.

Required Education: Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred. Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
