Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Registrar in Trauma. In this role, you will be responsible for the collection and reporting of data regarding trauma identification, treatment, and follow-up on each eligible trauma patient. 

 

The Trauma Registrar will participate in data quality activities such as peer audits, data edits, and special quality projects as assigned.  Additionally, the Registar will maintain the trauma registry database(s) and generates necessary reports to meet the needs of the trauma registry customers.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Abstracting Cases: Examines and interprets trauma-specific data from the medical record and other sources for coding and data entry into a computerized trauma registry abstract. Verifies clinical information with medical staff in order to ensure appropriate assignment of trauma diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and to ensure that data reflect the current standard-of-care for each patient.
  • Quality Assurance: Audits Trauma registry data for accuracy and completeness through peer reviews, database edits system, case debates, and participation in the Trauma Registry Data Quality Subcommittee.
  • Follow-up: Collects patient follow-up and survival data from the medical record, follow-up correspondence with patient and/or physician, and any other applicable sources for coding and direct on-line data entry into the computerized trauma registry database. Calculates and reports rates of patient follow-up on a regular basis.
  • Database Maintenance: Enters and maintains patient computer data to ensure conformance to trauma registry operational standards; preserves the confidentiality and security of patient data stored in trauma registry files.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, or related field
  • Registered Health Information certification (RHIT, RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate effectively within a team and with physicians and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to assess clinical source documents (i.e. pathology reports, operative reports, discharge summaries, clinic notes, and apply coding rules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) certification.
  • Working knowledge of the following coding systems and manuals: Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) Coding, AAAM Training, ICD-10, ICD-9, Digital Innovations Software, Illinois Department of Public Health Trauma Registry, National Trauma Database.
  • Working knowledge of the National Trauma Database Standards of American College of Surgeons.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
