In this role as an EEG Technologist III, you will work independently and proficiently in the preparation of patients for both routine and long-term AV/EEG monitoring.  You will have the ability to act as a physician extender by performing initial analysis of recorded EEG and audio-video data and creating a preliminary report for the purpose of physician review.  You will perform data management by clipping, pruning, archiving, and purging of EEG data after final report is signed by the attending. You will also perform specialty procedures/testing including but not limited to, intracranial EEG set-up and recording from implanted electrodes, assisting the physician with stimulation via intracranial electrodes, ECOG and DBS recordings in the operating room, and recording in the radiology suite during a WADA test.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Obtains history and explains procedure to patients. Accurately measures head and applies recording electrodes with the collodion or paste technique, according to the 10/20 or expanded 10/10 system.
  • Recognizes physiologic and non-physiologic artifacts and eliminates and/or properly monitors.
  • Obtains standard and complex long-term audio/video EEG recordings from both scalp and intracranial electrodes. Recognizes artifacts, both physiologic and non-physiologic, and equipment malfunction and takes appropriate steps to eliminate or rectify them.
  • Responsible for accurately annotating normal and abnormal EEG findings, recognizing artifacts, seizures and seizure-like patterns, subtle changes, changes in level of consciousness, and EEG patterns of prognostic significance, utilizing ACNS accepted terminology.
  • Independently writes preliminary EEG reports with detailed description of EEG patterns, clinical behavior, seizure semiology, and mapping of ictal events and interictal abnormalities. Provide selection of representative samples and preliminary report to epileptologist on service.
  • Identifies abnormalities (e.g., ictal, inter-ictal, paroxysmal activity and non-epileptic behavioral events. and clips, prunes, and archives these as separate files in accordance with institutional SOP.
  • Immediately alerts appropriate medical staff (per institutional SOP) of any EEG studies requiring urgent attention and/or any additional support for interpretation including but not limited to seizures and other critical events captured on video.
  • Able to perform intraoperative electrocorticography, cortical stimulation, DBS recordings, and intra-carotid sodium amobarbital (Wada) studies with minimal assistance.
  • Participates in all aspects of subdural/stereo-EEG monitoring, including electrode connections, montage creation/verification, troubleshooting stimulation for cortical mapping, and disconnection.
  • Maintains monitoring equipment in excellent operating condition, detects instrument and computer malfunctions, corrects the problems whenever possible and notifies the supervisor.
  • Trains and assists junior technologists as necessary. Attends clinical conferences in support of maintaining credentials and certifications along with updating knowledge base and skillset.
  • Participates in the development and revision of center policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. College coursework in health-related field preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience performing electro-neurodiagnostic studies and can accurately interpret EEG data.
  • Must be CPR certified.
  • Must hold registry in Electroencephalography (R.EEGT.)
  • Registered in two of three possible specialties recognized by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technology (ABRET):
    • EEG
    • CLTM
    • NA-CLTM

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
