Special Procedures Cath Lab Nurse (RN), Full-time (1.0), Rotating Shift, 4 x 10-hour shifts plus call, University of Chicago Medicine, Hyde Park, Illinois

 

We're hiring a full-time Special Procedures Cath Lab Nurse (RN) in the Hyde Park, Illinois location!

 

 

As a Special Procedures Nurse (RN) in Cath Lab and under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, provides technically complex and high risk nursing care and education to patients. Works as a part of a clinical program team providing specialized clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management and other direct care to Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC). Supports those functions necessary for the development, implementation, support, treatment, measurement and/or maintenance of the VAD program and clinical trials and patients impacted by such.

 

Special Procedures Cath Lab Nurse Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
  • Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with efficiency and high standards of quality; assures that the proper protocol is used for each sedation.
  • Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of agespecific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual needs.
  • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
  • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person. Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment. Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies. Emergency equipment maintained with adequate availability, good working order and restocks as needed with a fiscal awareness and accountability.
  • Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible.
  • Coordinates LVAD evaluation for potential LAVD patients prior to formal evaluation presentation. Coordinates post operative education prior to discharge. Assists the VAD coordinators with staff competencies and ongoing education.
  • Provides education to patients and families requiring VAD therapy, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.
  • Takes patient histories, conducts physical examinations, and records the date in the patient's record; screens patients to determine the need for hospital admission, making referrals to other disciplines as indicated, writes progress notes; prepares patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtains psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assumes responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Maintains hospital required nursing & ICU unit specific competencies needed to provide proficient nursing care; RN will provide continuity of care for infant, pediatric or adult patients based on area of specialty. This includes assisting in the care of critically ill patients during sedation/procedural encounters. Administering high-risk infusion and transfusion (i.e. chemotherapy medicines).
  • Contributes to the Patient Services Sector/Outpatient Services Sector offering constructive suggestions for change and participating in the planning, implementation and evaluation of new and existing programs utilizing evidence based practice.
  • RN uses nursing knowledge to anticipate and plan for patient care needs. The RN understands and applies safety principles and serves as a resource to other healthcare personnel on patient care. RN knows the potential risks and complications from specialty procedures and can assist in the initial treatment of adverse effects in their area of expertise.
  • The RN is expert in assessing and treating and evaluating patient conditions specific to their work area, e.g., anxiety, pain, claustrophobia and underlying disease conditions. Due to the complex nature of pain, RN will evaluate and treat pain in a prompt, caring fashion and reassess after each intervention, charting per UCMC protocol.
  • Identifies, participates in and promotes quality improvement for care and processes in the VAD program.
    • Tracks and monitors Joint Commission performance measures.
    • Ensures implementation of action plans related to regulatory compliance, quality improvement and patient safety.
    • Ensures compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and standards.
    • Evaluates outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiates changes in the nursing approach accordingly.

 

Required Qualifications

  • RN Required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing referred; experience may be considered in lieu of degree in addition to 5+ years clinical experience
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership/Management experience in area of specialty
  • Experience working in a research environment
  • 2 to 3 years of recent Critical Care/ Emergency room nursing experience (or 2 to 3 years oncology experience)
  • One additional certification in area specialty

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
