This department is the Pathology Laboratory. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Under the direction of the Pathologists and Pathology Supervisor and/or Lead, the histotechnologist is expected to function with minimal supervision; receives and properly processes specimens for the Pathologists in a timely manner; maintains slide files and records; assists the Pathologist with frozen sections/tissue x-ray/diagnosis; functions in a limited capacity in cytology preparation; meets productivity standards and participates in performance improvement initiatives. Their professional practice supports the hospital vision. They are accountable to maintain and promote trust, recognition and respect for the laboratory and hospital by positively interacting with physicians, patients and staff.
Essential Job Functions
Helps to ensure stains and supplies are used efficiently and unnecessary waste is minimized
Communicates with immediate supervisor regularly and keeps him or her informed of problems, complaints, performance issues, supply/quality problems, concerns, workflow
Assists in the orientation of new employees to the histology department
Immediately notifies pathologist/designated person of error or any potential problem
Demonstrates knowledge/judgment concerning histology procedures and ability to establish priorities and organize effectively
Prepares immediate stain on FNA specimens for pathologists when needed
Demonstrates knowledge/judgment concerning histology procedures and ability to establish priorities and organize effectively
Performs manual and automated special stains and immuno-histochemical stains as appropriate
Capable of performing special rapid/manual staining procedures; i.e,. bone marrow and rapid keratin
Operates and maintains equipment in Histology and insures proper functioning of equipment, promptly notifies Department Supervisor of an instrument or reagent malfunction
Maintains competency in all areas of department related to histology, specimen packaging and shipping, hazardous materials, and laboratory information systems
Adheres to OSHA/CLIA/HIPAA/DNV/CAP/TJC and other accrediting guidelines

Compensation & Benefits Overview
UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
