Job duties and training for this position are generally separated into the 2 work areas, histology and cytology, although cross training will be done as needed to support the pathology department. The Pathology Lab is known for Whether you need outpatient lab work or are staying in the hospital for inpatient services, UChicago Medicine provides the most comprehensive lab services available anywhere. This department is the Pathology Laboratory. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
Under the direction of the Pathology Supervisor and/or Lead, the Anatomic Pathology technician provides clerical and technical assistance to the Pathologists, Pathologist Assistant, Histotechnologists and Cytotechnologists; is responsible for the efficient and accurate receiving, identification, accessioning and preparation of surgical and cytology specimens; processing of referral orders; maintaining inventory and stocking of reception, grossing and frozen section areas; practicing of safe handling and disposal of body tissues and fluids.
Essential Job Functions
Communicates with immediate supervisor regularly and informs of problems, complaints, performance issues, supply/quality problems, concerns, and workflow
Assists in the orientation and training of new employees as needed
Immediately notifies pathologist/designated person of error or any potential problem
Assists with inventory of grossing, frozen-section area, and cytology supplies and ensures items needed are submitted for ordering
Helps to ensure grossing, frozen-section area, and cytology stains and supplies are used efficiently and unnecessary waste is minimized
Supports the Ingalls vision by consistently demonstrating a positive and supportive attitude to patients, physicians, visitors and co-workers and presents the Anatomical Pathology Department in a positive and professional manner
Promotes teamwork through communication and support
Demonstrates knowledge/judgment concerning Anatomic Pathology computer procedures, specimens, associated cassettes and slides, accurate record keeping and ability to establish priorities and organize effectively
Receives, accessions, and prepares specimens while addressing and documenting any discrepancies with specimens, labeling, or requisitions
Appropriately labels specimens, cassettes or slides after verifying information on requisition and specimen container
Retains and discards all specimens according to the lab retention policy
Adheres to OSHA/CLIA/HIPAA/TJC/DNV/CAP and other accrediting guidelines
Successful completion of annual hospital and department competencies, and lab safety requirements
Monitors department inventory of supplies and orders accordingly to maintain sufficient levels of necessary supplies
Assists pathologists with frozen sections by setting up work area, staining immediate slides according to protocol, and taking x-ray film to Radiology for development and interpretation
Wraps and removes limbs to/from morgue
Accessions Gyn ThinPrep paps and Non-Gyn specimens in the AP computer while addressing and documenting any discrepancies with specimens, labeling, or requisitions
Orders and prepares vials and labels for HPV testing for microbiology
Labels and aliquots vials for microbiology for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea testing

Compensation & Benefits Overview
UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
