Summer 2025 Nurse Extern Program @ Ingalls Memorial

Full-time, Day Shift Available

10-week Summer Nurse Externship program

 

In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine’s mission to provide superior health care, the mission of the Nurse Extern Program is to provide exceptional professional development for students completing their last year in an ADN, BSN, or direct entry MSN program. The focus of the nurse externship program will include Medical/Surgical, Adult ICU, Emergency Department and Pediatrics.

 

In this 10-week summer intensive program, students will be matched with one area for the duration of the Nurse Externship program. 

We are looking for candidates that have a passion to work for UChicago!  Following the summer nurse externship, there will be an opportunity to continue to work during your last year of school. The schedule will be flexible to work with your school schedule.

Job functions:

  • Performs A.M. and P.M. cares as assigned or requested
  • Bathes patients and makes beds as assigned or requested;
  • Takes vital signs as assigned or requested and reports to Staff Nurse;
  • Ambulates, lifts and positions patients according to policy and procedure;
  • Assists patients with elimination needs and appropriate measurement;
  • Distributes meals and feeds patients;
  • Weighs patients according to plan of care at times ordered and reports to Staff Nurse;
  • Assist w/transfers patients with belongings appropriately labeled as according to policy;
  • Collects, accurately labels and transports specimens according to policy records vital signs, blood glucose, intake and output according to policy on appropriate form;
  • Follows safety policies to ensure patient, public, co-workers, and self well-being;
  • Transports patients; uses equipment on Nursing Unit safely;
  • Maintains orderly work environment by straightening patient rooms; disposes of body fluids according to infection control policies;
  • Presents a positive image of the hospital at all times;
  • Always treats patients, visitors, physicians, and staff with care, concern, and courtesy;
  • Responds quickly and appropriately to customer requests;
  • Demonstrates the hospital's quality philosophy by fulfilling all commitments accurately the first time;
  • Always maintains strict confidentiality; works cooperatively within department and with other areas;
  • Meets staffing needs with flexibility;
  • Responds quickly to requests for assistance;
  • Reports to work on time, as scheduled;
  • Speaks and writes clearly, concisely, and accurately; listens carefully and clarifies questions; finds ways to resolve disagreements;
  • Keeps appropriate staff informed about problems or concerns
  • Keeps informed of patient's condition or changes;
  • Relays accurate messages within a reasonable period of time;
  • Implements improvements after discussion with supervisor; 
  • Participates in mandatory in-services.

Required Qualifications

  • BLS (CPR)
  • Request 2 professional reference letters prior to the interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor
  • Copy of most recent transcript
  • 250-word essay on “What being a nurse means to you?” and “How this program will help you achieve your future goals as a nurse?
  • Successful Completion of one year of a two-year Associate Degree or Diploma program or in the second semester of the third year in a Baccalaureate program
  • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) 
  • You must hold a 3.0 GPA or higher

Nurse Externship Details

  • Candidates need to be available for Three, 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the 10-week program
  • Positions will include Day shift opportunities.
  • Candidates will be expected to work some weekends

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
