Job Description

Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a Data Scientist Engineer. This is a remote, work from home opportunity and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.  

 

The Data Scientist Engineer role is responsible for optimizing, deploying, automating, scaling, and managing solutions developed by the Data Science team. The data science engineer will work closely with the data science and analytics department, along with the clinical informatics and information technology departments. Sample projects include using software development platforms (such as Azure DevOps) to develop, optimize, maintain, and accept software into the production environment; manage software and hardware on production servers; validating data sources and identifying tools for final solutions. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of software engineering principles and data science workflows, healthcare data and privacy requirements, along with a passion for improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency. 

 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Review, optimize, validate, and deploy data science solutions into appropriate production environments  
  • Monitor and quantify the impact of current solutions and investigate the potential of alternative solutions  
  • Collaborate with organizational leaders to make data science a core differentiator  
  • Train and mentor others  
  • Assist data warehouse teams in creating technology for deploying data science solutions 
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Graduate degree (master's or PhD) in a quantitative field such as software engineering, computer science, statistics, or physical sciences (Masters or BA with industry experience also considered) 
  • Extensive experience working in Python/R or equivalent for data wrangling and model development 
  • Extensive experience working with software management and development platforms, including doing code reviews and automatic testing 
  • Experience deploying and monitoring analytical solutions in production 
  • Experience building and evaluating predictive models 
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, including documentation 
  • Strong problem-solving skills 
  • Strong communication (verbal, non-verbal, written) skills to a variety of audiences 
  • Critical thinking, including the ability to make logical assumptions to complete analyses 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Communication (verbally, nonverbally, and written) 
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback into future work 
  • Programming, intermediate knowledge of programming and scripting best practices  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with input from supervisor 
  • Ability to prioritize time with input from supervisor 
  • Ability to pivot to other projects based on organizational priorities 
  • Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment 

 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience with the Epic electronic health record, and healthcare data standards such as HL7, FHIR, and ICD codes 
  • Experience with cloud services 
  • Experience with managing servers running production software 
  • Knowledge of predictive modeling specific to healthcare 
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau 
  • Mentorship and training experience

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
