Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as an Interventional Radiology Technologist III in the Center for Care and Discovery.  

 

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $10,000

 

The Interventional Radiology, Technologist III works under the direction of the physician and nursing staff. The technologist performs a variety of functions before, during and after the interventional procedure as assigned. Includes patient education, maintenance of sterile environment, patient monitoring, and has knowledge of procedural supplies in order to aid performing physician. Prepares patient for the procedure by performing assigned tasks (i.e. scrub, recording, circulating). Applies principles of radiation protection as applicable. Exercises professional judgment in the performance of procedures. Provides necessary patient care during the course of procedures. Collaborates with all disciplines for well-coordinated care. Assists with other activities that will facilitate effective/efficient use of the resources in the pre and post-procedure phases of care. These duties are expected during daily shifts as well as on call.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

Trained/Competent in at least TWO of the following modalities:

 

Interventional Radiology (IR):

  • The technician must have knowledge of the X-ray equipment in use, proper knowledge and understanding of vascular anatomy
  • The technologist will support complex imaging including C-arm, ICE, CT Scans and 3D spins as well as the power injector
  • Knowledge and ability to set up and troubleshoot all imaging and radiology equipment is required
  • Assist interventionalist in the performance of invasive procedures related to catheters and stents

Interventional Cardiology (Cath Lab):

  • Utilizes observation and assessment skills to determine patient baseline status and continually monitor patient status throughout the delivery of care, including the monitoring and recording of hemodynamic patient data
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the recognition of basic arrhythmias and communicates abnormal findings to the physician
  • They will provide complex hemodynamic support which may include IABP placement and operation, CardioHelp, Impella and Tandem heart
  • The technologist will support complex imaging including ICE, FFR and OCT as well as power injector, temporary pacer, rotational and orbital atherectomy. Knowledge and ability to set up and troubleshoot all hemodynamic support, imaging and radiology equipment is required
  • Assist manager in maintaining CAP accreditation standards for documentation, QA/QC, Proficiency Testing, and staff competency
  • Lead representative/liaison for all CAP data in the cath lab; submit monthly reports to CAP personnel

Electrophysiology (EP):

  • Assist Cardiac Electrophysiologist in the performance of invasive surgical procedures related to intra-cardiac defibrillators and pacemakers, sets up sterile table, assist in the application of sterile drapes, hands sterile instruments and sutures to the physician during the procedure and performs after-care of surgical instruments
  • The technologist provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intraoperative technical functions that will assist the physician to carry out a safe procedure with optimal results for the patient
  • Understand the functionality and application of 3D Mapping system
  • Imaging Specialty: Performs specialty diagnostic imaging (CT, MR, IR, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, and Mammography studies as assigned. Applies principles of radiation protection (if applicable). Learns to position the patient being tested to insure that proper image capture is achieved. Learns to select proper technical factors and utilize computer to record patient status. Begins to function proficiently with all technical equipment in diagnostic modality. Learns to prepare contrast media for administration to patients and assists the physician. Works under the supervision of a lead technologist in area as assigned

Surgical Assist:

  • Prepares the patient for each procedure using aseptic technique and prepares the surgical site by shaving and cleansing with aseptic technique
  • Demonstrates proper EKG lead, electro cautery dispersive pad, BP cuff, and pulse oximeter placement
  • Assists physician in scrubbing for sterile invasive procedures
  • Passes instruments and materials while maintaining the sterility of the equipment and environment

Other Related Duties:

  • Assist Interventionalist in the performance of invasive procedures related to imaging, catheters and stents
  • Prepares the patient for each procedure using aseptic technique and prepares the surgical site by shaving and cleansing with aseptic technique
  • Sets up sterile table, assist in the application of sterile drapes, hands instruments and sutures to the physician during the procedure and performs after-care of instruments and equipment
  • Utilizes observation and assessment skills to determine patient baseline status and continually monitors patient status throughout the delivery of care, including the monitoring and recording of fluoroscopic imaging and patient data
  • The Interventional Technologist provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intraprocedural technical functions that will assist the Interventionalist to carry out a safe procedure with optimal results for the patient
  • Consistently demonstrates leadership abilities in support of UCMC’s goals, including excellence in safety, quality and the patient experience
  • Performs the preceptor role in the training of students, orientees and Procedural staff; Assists in the orientation of staff
  • Serves as a mentor and role model
  • Serves as a resource for staff
  • Actively participates in at least one department or medical center committee
  • Contributes to creating a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation and commitment for all who participate in the care of patients
  • Participates in a changing environment by being supportive and cooperative with changes at the unit level

  • Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation exposure to patients
  • Utilizes computer to record patient status
  • Functions proficiently with all technical equipment in diagnostic modality
  • Prepares contrast media for administration to patients and assists the physician
  • Works independently in areas as assigned
  • Assists in the maintenance and control of lab inventory including the rotation of stock and notification of potential out-dating
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat according to current 5S standards
  • Apply quality, lean, and problem solving expertise to improve operations including understanding flow of current and future states and implement process improvements
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to appropriate person
  • Perform in a high acuity emergency procedure setting
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • A Tier III Technologist has graduated from an accredited Radiology Technologist (RT) program
  • Ability to take call overnight/weekends
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four years or more of previous experience working in Interventional/Special Procedures setting
  • Additional skills sought include effective communication skills and ability to work effectively with other staff members who make up the team providing care to patients
  • Proven visual acuity, manual dexterity and accuracy required
  • Independent judgment and initiative required in order to utilize the specialized equipment involved and work within a complex organizational structure

  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • ARRT (VI)
  • Licensure by State of Illinois (IEMA)
  • Advanced certification in Vascular Interventional Radiology required or obtained within 2 years of hire date
