Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Executive Director, System Public Safety.  We are seeking an experienced professional to develop strategy and execute the Public Safety program across the UChicago Medicine System to include:  Directing the activities and programs across all locations in the health system to ensure the security and safety of employees, visitors, patients and their families. Developing and implementing short- and long-term goals, objectives, and programs for Public Safety and coordinating with the University Safety & Security department on Hyde Park security. Managing the System Public Safety function using performance metrics and measurement against goals to include an annual risk assessment. Leading Workplace Violence Prevention strategy and the execution across the health system. Developing relationships with the University community, law enforcement partners, community partners and service providers. Communicating strategies and programs to the University, Health System Administration, as well as the broader community.

 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Support Services, this Executive Director is a strategic business partner. A critical thinker and influential leader, the successful candidate will have 2-6 direct reports and provide leadership for a department of 200 staff that operate and maintain the Hyde Park Academic Medical Center campus facilities, in addition to the Ingalls Memorial Hospital campus and the UChicago Medicine Crown Point campus, as well as various ambulatory locations in growing health system. They must actively manage human, capital, and operational resources using well-developed metrics and KPIs. This position has oversight for the annual budget of $30 million spread over several cost centers.

 

Who you are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of Healthcare Security or Public Safety experience, preferably from a large hospital system with multiple locations.
  • Minimum 7 years of financial management, including solid budget experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to speak articulately in high-level forums and to answer difficult questions with confidence.
  • Knowledge and expertise in leading Workplace Violence Safety programs.
  • Prior strategic planning experience that has resulted in a record of strategic project accomplishments.
  • Proven ability to lead change, organize teams, and delegate responsibility appropriately – using data to drive continual improvements and positive performance.
  • CHPA or CPP Certification strongly preferred.

What you’ll do as the Executive Director, System Public Safety: 

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Public Safety Department to include policy development, budgetary responsibility, supplier management, staff performance and daily business operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all related federal, state, and local regulatory agencies and institutional requirements.
  • Plan and develop public safety strategies to promote new programs for the Health System in collaboration with other key stakeholders and units to improve the level of service for the Medical Center and its surrounding communities.
  • Strong understanding of Public Safety technology systems and strategies to be able to develop and guide strategic direction on key systems such as Video Management, Access Management, Visitor Management, Infant Protection, Communications, and Reporting systems.
  • Serve as liaison to the University, City, State and Federal governments and outside entities regarding public safety, parking, traffic, transit, and signage issues.
  • Collaborate with the University, Medical Center, and community regarding transportation and parking alternatives.
  • Generate annual reports on the Public Safety program to keep management and key stakeholders informed of progress to goals and key projects.
  • Collaborate with the University Police leadership to assure that Medical Center needs are met in the management and planning of transportation services and ensure all communications regarding UC Police services are delivered in a timely and effective manner
  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the institution.
