Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as a Staff Nurse in the 10W Hematology/Oncology department. At UChicago Medicine, we bring the world’s most innovative approaches to patients with all conditions, from common to complex. This department has an excellent team that is knowledgeable about cancer care and eager to learn, teach and share new treatments for our patients and families. This unit provides care for patients with array of cancer diagnosis. The main population is solid tumor patients that are in for symptom management, chemotherapy treatments, supportive oncology and palliative care. We care for the whole patient and family to ensure they are knowledgeable about their diagnosis and treatment. It is a very busy unit and you will learn a lot about holistic care of the patient. You will have the ability to work with physicians that are constantly pushing the bounds of possibility forward, conducting groundbreaking research and providing lifesaving, personalized patient care. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. 

 

A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision.

Essential Job Functions

  • Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs. 
  • Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients.
  • Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients.
  • Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned by Care Center Director or Patient Care Manager.
  • Provides support to peers by assisting as needed, being a resource person and working as a team member.
  • Assists Care Center in development/attainment of goals and objectives.
  • Uses clinical pathways and/or plans of care incorporating standards of practice.
  • Assesses own need for professional growth and development and seeks appropriate resources to meeting needs.
  • Attends continuing education programs and participates in program evaluation.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing
  • Associate Degree in Nursing
    • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
  • Current RN Illinois license
  • Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
