Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Transplant Financial Specialist in the High Dose Chemotherapy Department.

As a Transplant Financial Specialist, you will be responsible for pre-registration, insurance verification, (in/outpatient), and the pre/post-transplant account maintenance functions of transplant recipients, donors (donating stem cells or bone marrow or solid organs) and donor search screens. In this role, you will perform financial and administrative tasks required on behalf of patients (families) and the Hospitals.

As a Transplant Financial Specialist, you will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring the flow of revenue generated by not only the transplant recipient, but any donor charges associated with that recipient. This position involves extensive utilization of the Hospitals revenue systems and constant interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, insurance companies, donors and other members of the Hospitals' staff. The Transplant Financial Specialist collects and verifies demographic information, insurance coverage and transplant benefits, and referring physician data for transplant candidates and potential donors. This individual also provides financial counseling and information regarding the transplant process at the Hospitals to transplant recipients, donors, and related Hospital staff. In this role, you will work with insurance companies to obtain the necessary authorizations for the transplant to insure proper and timely payments for all related Transplant services, and acts as an advocate to the patient when billing problems occur.

Essential Job Functions

  • Handles the complete financial case management of transplant recipient, donor and all transplant related services. This includes management of various account work queues to capture potential errors before billing; ensure that the correct transplant plan code and coverage are applied and that effective term dates are accurate; perform bundled billing as applicable
  • Interview patients by telephone and in-person to collect demographic, financial, insurance, referral physician and medical data. Provide financial counseling as applicable
  • Verify insurance coverage for Transplant services in order to expedite billing and collection
  • Complete periodic review of benefits to ensure transplant coverage is active throughout the requisite period
  • Answer questions regarding insurance, hospital charges and payments for both Hospitals and UCPG
  • Investigate charge disputes, and if found to be valid prepare documentation to initiate correction
  • Document all aspects of verification, pre-authorization and telephone communications in a timely manner. This includes keeping track of admission and discharge dates to update effective term dates
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management

Qualifications

  • BA degree or equivalent and /or 2 years’ experience in medical insurance verification and other hospital finance areas;
  • Requires Windows based PC experience
  • Has extensive personal and telephone contact in greeting, directing and assisting internal and external customers experience
  • Strong analytic and financial assessment abilities as well as the ability to maintain close attention to a variety of details are required in order to perform duties effectively
  • Must be multitask oriented and able to function in a constantly changing environment
  • Requires the ability to problem solve independently and must be strongly invested in team management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification
  • Strong coding and billing experience, or experience with financial counseling
