Job Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Ambulatory Operations and Director of Ambulatory Oncology Nursing, responsible for administrative and patient care activities at the University of Chicago Hospitals.    The nurse manager oversees day-to-day operations, including scheduling, planning, organizing, and directing all activities related to patient centered care in the unit, and handles an array of administrative duties, including recruitment and hiring; supervision; purchasing; inventory; facility, safety and equipment management.   Responsible for preparing for and participating in various inspections, including the JCAHO accreditation process. 

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of unit staff. Identifies recruitment needs and necessary staffing levels
  • Evaluates and revises orientation plans as necessary to ensure training of staff members is appropriate when carrying out physicians' orders, seeing to the needs of patients, and developing approved nursing practices
  • Determines staffing needs in consultation with physician director and assures proper scheduling and utilization of services in maintaining quality patient care
  • Assists staff members in identification of learning needs and promotes staff participation in professional and institutional activities. Participates in and promotes educational opportunities for staff
  • Encourages staff participation in designing and attending in-service classes
  • Evaluates staff performance on a formal and informal basis. Completes annual performance evaluations and forwards to appropriate individuals. Provides recommendations for merit increases
  • Recognizes staff for performance, provides constructive criticisms and/or reprimands, commendations, suspensions, discharges, transfers, promotions or demotions
  • Handles difficult situations involving interpersonal relationships between staff and physicians, patients, families of patients, and other employees
  • Establishes priorities and assures implementation of goals and objectives, evaluating performance and reporting significant results.
  • Ensures that appropriate staff attend mandatory educational programs and in-services per JCAHO regulations
  • Assists in testing and evaluating new equipment, procedures and program
  • Participates in periodic review of sectional activities needs assessment and development and prioritization of goals and objectives. *Assists in the development and review of policies, procedures, and standards
  • Makes regular inspections to ascertain state of maintenance of the environment, including equipment, and takes required corrective action
  • Confers with supervisory and administrative personnel concerning management problems
  • Collaborates with medical director on quality assurance issues, collecting data for staff meetings, research, reports and evaluation
  • Works closely with radiology/mammography to ensure optimization of patient scheduling and clinic flow
  • Promotes safety of patients and personnel by compliance with institution and regulatory agency standards and policies
  • Defines and organizes quality improvement initiatives
  • Participates in budget development, making recommendations regarding staffing, equipment, and supply issues
  • Monitors expenditures throughout the year, and takes required corrective action
  • Assumes accountability for own nursing practice and professional growth
  • Acts as a role model to promote professional growth and clinical competence
  • Participates as appropriate in educational programs designed to promote professional growth and development, including planning, teaching and coordination of education programs
  • Management of the NAPBC accreditation in conjunction with the Breast Program Leadership Committee Program Director

 

Qualifications

  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Five or more years nursing experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters of Science in Nursing, but experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Ambulatory nursing experience
  • Several years in a nursing leadership capacity preferred
  • Two or more years of experience with oncology
  • National certification (if no certification, must obtain within 1 year of hire)
