Job Description

Be a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Coordinator with our Ophthalmology clinic in Hyde Park. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science provides medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases. The department members' interests include cataract surgery with lens implantation, transplantation including corneal diseases plus refractive surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery, and medical diseases of the retina including special treatment of diabetic retinopathy and age-related retinal degenerations, eye plastic surgery, strabismus surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology.

 

In this role, under the direction of the Eye Center manager, the Ophthalmic Technician assists the attending physicians in the exam and care of the Eye Center patients.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Identifies and tracks infants in need of ROP surveillance using established protocol
  • Schedules exams based on gestational age and ensures inpatient rounding schedule is accurate
  • Keeps parent(s)/surrogate decision-makers informed and documents in EMR
  • Maintains ROP census with regular review with high attention to detail for both outpatient visits and inpatient rounding
  • Tracks and schedules weekly eye exams by reviewing provider notes
  • Communicates regularly with care team and patient decision makers on updates and care plan
  • Ensures detailed documentation to all parties is regularly updated in EMR and certified letters are sent in a timely fashion for patient communication
  • Works closely with NICU, Ophthalmology Clinic, Ophthalmology RN, NICU RN, NICU Case Management, Ophthalmologist, and Neonatologist for all care coordination
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to ascertain whether a situation is urgent, emergent or routine

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Clinical certification (such as MA, LPN, or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with patients, families, and care teams
  • Proven ability to use data to drive performance improvement
  • Exceptional organization and ideal experience in patient management and tracking
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT)
  • Ophthalmology experience if not a COA

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the Day shift, from approximately 8:00am-4:30pm. You will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. We anticipate you will be scheduled to work 100% at the Hyde Park campus. The days of the week that you are scheduled will be Monday - Friday.a part of
