Summer 2025 Nurse Extern Program - Medical/Surgical, Adult ICU, Emergency Department, and Pediatrics

Full-time, Day Shift & Night Shift Available

10-week Summer Nurse Externship program, Monday, June 9th – Friday, August 16th, 2025

 

In conjunction with the University of Chicago Medicine’s mission to provide superior health care, the mission of the Nurse Extern Program is to provide exceptional professional development for students completing their last year in an ADN, BSN, or direct entry MSN program. The focus of the nurse externship program will include Medical/Surgical, Adult ICU, Emergency Department and Pediatrics.

 

In this 10-week summer intensive program, students will be matched with one area for the duration of the Nurse Externship program. 

We are looking for candidates that have a passion to work for UChicago!  Following the summer nurse externship, there will be an opportunity to continue to work during your last year of school. The schedule will be flexible to work with your school schedule.

Application and Interviewing Process

  • All Interviews will be via Zoom.
  • Interviews will be scheduled in October 2024. Also, in Februarry 2025. The interviews will be scheduled based on when the applications were submitted and all required documents have been completed

Required Qualifications

  • BLS (CPR)
  • Request 2 professional reference letters prior to the interview - one letter is required from a nursing instructor
  • Copy of most recent transcript
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher required
  • 250-word essay on “What being a nurse means to you?” and “How this program will help you achieve your future goals as a nurse?” 
  • Be enrolled full-time in an accredited ADN, BSN, or direct-entry MSN program
  • Must be entering your final year in an ADN, BSN, or direct-entry MSN program in the fall of 2025
  • Please upload all documents and reference letters via the "candidate document uploads" on your candidate profile
  • *All required documents are due prior to your scheduled interview

Nurse Externship Details

  • Candidates need to be available for Three, 12-hour shifts for the full duration of the 10-week program
  • Positions will include Day and Night shift opportunities.
  • Candidates will be expected to work some weekends
