Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine, Ingalls Memorial Hospital as a Respiratory Care Services Assistant Manager (RRT) at our Harvey, Illinois location.  

 

The Assistant Manager for Respiratory Care Services will be responsible and accountable for over-seeing the operations and patient care duties of the Adult Hospital Respiratory Care Services department. Duties include completing daily assignments, quality audits and Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) boards, facilitating daily huddles with staff, and directing delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care in a financially responsible manner. This is in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Respiratory Care Services Manager (RCSM). ARCSM supports RCSM with 24/7 coverage of the unit in creating, maintaining and adapting the scheduling of all staff on the 6-week scheduling periods. In the absence of the RCSM, the ARCSM assumes responsibility for the unit.

 

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs all functions of a respiratory therapist to maintain skills and credibility with staff. Assist & collaborates with the RCSM in supporting changes for new and existing programs with staff input and feedback. Assist in development of goals that are consistent with department goals and hospital’s mission. Assists & collaborates in utilizing appropriate resources and departments to facilitate operations. Active participation in committee work and task force assignments on as needed bases. Identifies issues, presents strategies and acts as a change.
  • Promotes and sustains an effective communication process within the department, support center, and throughout the organization. Creates a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment for all patient care team members. Conducts periodic and attends scheduled staff meetings to provide opportunities for discussion of staff and unit/shift concerns. Align unit goals with hospital wide Annual Operating Plan (AOP).  Assigns disciplinary action when necessary (e.g. written warning).
  • Role models and shares department goals for supporting the budget process and expectations to promote greater fiscal awareness and accountability of all staff. Participates in the planning for short and long-term provision of human resources, supplies, and equipment to meet patients’ needs.

  • Determines own professional needs through ongoing self-assessment and evaluation of role performance and assumes responsibility for meeting those needs. Belongs to and participates in appropriate professional and/or specialty organizations. Attends relevant workshops, conferences and seminars locally and nationally.
  • Provide clinical expertise and resources for unit. Demonstrates clinical and leadership skills, serving as a role model for staff members. Requires the ability to set-up, operate and maintain support machines, i.e. ventilators, monitoring equipment, gas cylinders and provide patient care as needed. Understands and provides care for infants, toddlers, school-aged children, adults and geriatrics. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to different age groups.
  • Participates in the CQI processes. Assists in identifying issues to be examined, collect and analyze data, and report to QI committee and staff. Collaborates with the RCSM on effecting change in-patient care delivery and operations based on research, quality and improvement findings. Promote and encourage QI and research activities appropriate to specialty area.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Current Illinois Respiratory Care License
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) current thru the American heart Association 
  • Minimum of three years’ Respiratory Care experience in both adult care and neonatal/pediatrics.
  • One year of supervisory experience within respiratory care required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills required.
  •  Excellent interpersonal communication skills to maintain an open network of communication among staff members, sector leadership, and other health care professionals and departments.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Respiratory, Chemical, Biological or Medical Technology
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)  
  • Epic trained 
  • Flexible Schedule
