    Advanced Pharmacy Technician, Inpatient Pharmacy, full time days job in Chicago, IL.

Under general direction, the Advanced Pharmacy Technician performs all duties of a pharmacy technician, may involve controlled substances, investigational drugs, or pharmacy purchasing.  These duties are performed in compliance with the departmental policies and procedures providing optimal pharmaceutical care to the patients at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the provision of safe, accurate, and timely medication distribution and reliable pharmaceutical care to a variety of patient populations.


    In addition to the pharmacy technician responsibilities as stated above, the Advanced Pharmacy Technician must also have a knowledge base of and ability to work with and understand:

    • Delivers controlled substance stock to the nursing units; distributes controlled substances throughout the various areas of the pharmacy; audits-controlled substance stock in pharmacy.
    • Assists the investigational drug pharmacist in ordering medications, inventory control, record keeping, shipments and receipts, and storage of all investigational agents.
    • Monitors drug inventories and initiates purchases; transmits purchases; prepares summaries of transactions for financial analysis; interprets and prices 62’s; updates prices on computer price files and price lists; receives, maintains and distributes inventories of supplies and finished products. Assists in planning, implementing and coordinating activities of pharmacy technicians; assists in new pharmacy technician training; performs various departmental quality assurance checks; restocks and audits CPR carts
    • Coordinate workflow and prioritize technician duties and responsibilities.
    • Comply with all federal and state health care laws, regulations and rules (including Medicare and Medicaid billing requirements which are applicable to the employee's job duties).

     Advanced Pharmacy Technician Education and Requirements:

    • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Bachelors or other advanced degree preferred.
    • Valid Illinois pharmacy technician license. Certified Pharmacy Technician License (National Certification)
    • Successful completion of HR entrance examination.
    • Experience and training as defined by one of the of the following qualifications: Minimum of at least 5 years’ experience as an inpatient hospital pharmacy technician OR Graduation from an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, with at least 2 years of experience as an inpatient hospital pharmacy technician OR Minimum of at least one year experience as an inpatient hospital pharmacy technician at UCMC, with above average scores on all UCMC employee evaluations, and no disciplinary actions in the last 12 months (except time & attendance)
    • UCMC authorized Tech II training programs for sterile and non-sterile compounding including annual competencies
    • Knowledge and proficiency with hospital operations and pharmacy practices and procedures, medications and medical supplies, hospital practice and healthcare regulatory requirements, and record keeping.
    • Computer entry skills and ability to accurately type at 35 WPM. Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently with attention to detail, perform mathematical computations, and overseeing the work of others, and interact effectively with others.
