    Data Center Infrastructure Engineer – Senior

     

    Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine. The Information Services Department currently has an opportunity for a Senior Data Center Infrastructure Engineer.

     

    Job Summary

     

    In this role, the Data Center Infrastructure Engineer - Senior is responsible for day to day operation of UChicago Medicine’s data centers, IT spaces and associated support equipment including; HVAC, UPS’S, power distribution units, emergency generators and critical monitoring.  There will be ample opportunity to work independently with general direction from other team members and the Data Center Infrastructure Manager.  The Data Center Engineer’s primary focus is centered on uptime while minimizing risk.

     

    *Data Center Engineers provide 24x7x365 coverage in Darien, M-F 1st Shift coverage in Hyde Park and also support a number of off-site local offices.  Occasional local travel is required.

     

    Work Hours

    • Must be willing to work flexible shifts
    • Normal Darien Work Schedule - Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday
    •  **Training period will be in Darien on 1st Shift- Monday through Friday, 8:00am –5:00pm for approximately 4 weeks.**  After training, will be placed on a shift.

     

    Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

    • Responsible for scheduling and overseeing vendors
      • Ability to oversee vendors and be able to identify projects and implement solutions
      • Ability to identify and resolve network issues in the hospital and data center
      • Role identifies, diagnoses, and resolves UPS, HVAC and other vendor problems
    • Writes simple MOP’s and SOP’s for infrastructure maintenance and operation
      • Step by step detailed outline of operational procedures
      • Who, what, where and what to do if something goes wrong
      • Provide a back out plan
      • MOP = method of procedure (has to do with maintenance on a system; have vendor work off a system and go step-by-step through the process)
      • SOP = standard operating procedures (calls out the operation of critical infrastructure equipment; again, line-by-line detail)
    • Assists Specialist to Identify and diagnoses complex problems and factors affecting infrastructure systems
      • Works closely with team to manage maintenance and repair activities
    • Understands theory of operation of all infrastructure equipment and systems
      • Must understand theory of operation in order to determine if equipment is in normal state or condition
      • Ability to read and understand one-line diagrams, schematics and blueprints
      • Ability to instruct subordinates in theory of operation and normal operating conditions
      • General knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., familiar with proper tool safety, eye protection, ladder safety, etc.)
    • Racks, stacks and provisions servers, switches and cabling in data center and other IT spaces
      • Runs fiber and coax cross connects, and follows proper termination techniques per data center established processes, procedures and policies
      • Maintains detailed written records of all work activity
      • Determines work priorities from the Service Now queue and ensures adherence to all commit times
      • Carries out decommissioning of network servers and switches
      • Able to lift heavy equipment/items.
      • Able to perform all essential job functions, including walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation
    • Ability to operate generators, UPS’s, HVAC equipment and switchgear
      • Ability to manually operate all critical infrastructure equipment which would correlate back to understanding of operations (if you don’t understand it, you can’t do it)
    • Oversees space, power and cooling requirements in the data center
    • Additional projects and responsibilities as assigned by manager
    • Takes initiative in keeping order and cleanliness in data center and auxiliary spaces
      • Able to work days/nights/weekends/holidays, if needed and/or required

    Qualifications

    Required

     

    • BS or BA degree, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education, training or work experience required
    • Four (4) or more years of Infrastructure Engineering experience
    • Experience in maintenance and monitoring of server systems.
    • Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
    • Experience with computer hardware and server hardware or troubleshooting/diagnosing.
    • Must be able to work independently as well as work as part of a fast moving team
    • Travel to off-site locations may be required; must possess valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
    • Demonstrate strong work ethic
    • Take initiative and a proactive approach
    • Be adaptable to change

    Preferred

    •  Project Management experience a plus
    • Basic understanding of TCP IP networks and subnets
    • Experience with monitoring data center infrastructure
    • Experience with critical HVAC and fire detection/suppression systems is a plus
