    Public Safety Officer

    Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, University of Chicago Medicine, in the role of Public Safety Officer. Our Public Safety and Security Department provides a safe and secure working environment so that UCMC can pursue its healthcare vision and mission.


    In this role, you will work to maintain a secure and safe environment for faculty, staff, patients, visitors and property under the general supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor. You will analyze data and use independent judgment and discretion to dispatch appropriate public safety units to incidents based on priority and evaluation of the situation. In addition, you will greet visitors and ensures that they are properly directed based on established security guidelines. Occasionally you will staff individual security posts on an as-needed basis. You will periodically tour buildings and grounds for security inspection, and to observe performance of Public Safety Coordinators.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Assisting faculty, staff, patients, and visitors whenever needed and working to maintain a safe and secure environment for the entire Medical Center Community.
    • Patrolling the entire medical center on foot and inspecting hallways, stairways, and all other public areas.
    • Maintaining working knowledge of the University of Chicago Medicine’s Public Safety and security practices.
    • Routinely providing escort services upon request, and attending court or other legal proceedings.
    • Performing individual security post functions as set forth in Departmental policies and procedures.
    • For fire/safety hazards, reporting any unusual conditions or malfunctioning equipment.
    • Hands on Security; ability to defend self and/or others in case of physical confrontations.
    • Assisting in patient restraint (i.e. Emergency Department, Psychiatric unit).
    • Enforcing photo ID policy and parcel inspection policy along with all other University and University of Chicago Medicine policies.
    • In conjunction with the University Police Department, assisting with investigations of all criminal and/or suspicious occurrences in the medical center and reporting details of specific incidents as required.
    • In the event of emergencies, requesting emergency service assistance, obtaining necessary information, and notifying appropriate personnel.
    • Evacuating persons from dangerous areas, securing buildings or areas, and/or assisting in disaster situations.
    • Interacting with supervisory and line personnel throughout the organization to obtain/provide information and resolve conflicts.
    • Utilizing radio communications and emergency response procedures.
    • Handling the responsibility of the UC Medicine ID badge system.
    • The key control functions of the Public Safety department.
    • Supervising the work of the Public Safety Coordinators by assigning work, and observing and reviewing performance (both through the performance review process and through counseling as required). Recommending discipline of Public Safety Coordinators through the chain of command, participating in hiring Public Safety Coordinators; assigning work to Public Safety Coordinators, including overtime as necessary.
    • Evaluating Public Safety Coordinators, including evaluation of the quality and quantity of their work performance and scheduling of daily assignments.
    • Performing the communications dispatch function for UC Medicine Public Safety and monitoring the closed circuit television cameras.
    • Assigning Incident Report numbers to Public Safety personnel from Continuum Incident Report System.
    • Monitoring UCM Public Safety and University Police radio traffic and communicating with UCPD dispatch during any emergencies or incidents within the Med-Center that requires UCPD assistance.
    • Providing appropriate information to patients, visitors, staff, and employees while maintaining confidentiality.
    • Monitoring the UC Medicine alarm systems and submitting reports when required.
    • Directing and coordinating the Public Safety responses to calls for services and alarms.
    • Maintaining radio contact with Public Safety personnel to insure their safety.
    • Maintaining radio traffic and activity logs and assigning case numbers.
    • Communicating necessary information to other shifts, department administration/administrator on call, and UC Police in a timely manner.
    • Ensuring that all communication tasks and functions are carried out in an efficient manner.
    • Performing other duties assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Three years of experience in security or law enforcement required (at least one year in health care preferred).
    • Ability to complete IAHSS Certification Training Program within 90 days of employment.
    • Valid Driver’s License.
    • Ability to:
