    Attorney (Medical Liability)

     

    Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine. The Legal department is currently recruiting for an Associate General Counsel to join the Professional Liability defense team to advise and represents UCM in liability claims and suit matters with state or federal agencies, or in court actions.

     

    Summary

     

    In this role, the Associate General Counsel works with the Professional Liability legal defense team in the management and oversight of claims and litigation and physician licensing and privileging issues, and will work collaboratively with the Department of Risk Management and Patient Safety.

     

    Essential Job Functions

     

    • Provides consultation to senior management on all significant business and corporate matters.
    • Gives broad range of highly specialized legal advice to all levels of hospital management and medical staff.
    • Provides legal advice to and serves on several hospital/medical staff committees.
    • Assists in the development of methods for achieving the Corporations' goals within legal restrictions and purposes or reviews alternative courses
    • Coordinates with outside counsel regarding discovery
    • Reviews policy and procedures and other UCH guidelines
    • Represents the Hospitals in matters with state or federal agencies, or in court actions
    • Manages litigation including malpractice
    • Engages and manages outside counsel in complex matters
    • Provides legal services to affiliated health system entities

    Qualifications

     

    • Doctor of Law (J.D. from an accredited law school)
    • Admitted to the Illinois State Bar
    • Minimum 5 years prior legal experience in a law firm, preferably defending hospitals and health care providers
    • Superior Legal Judgment, writing, and communication skills
    • Ability to think and articulate quickly

     

    Preferred Qualifications

     

    • Emphasis defending hospitals and health care providers in medical liability matters
