    Special Procedures Nurse 


    Department: Infusion Therapy

    Shift: 40 hours per week (1.0) / Day Shift / 10-hr Shifts


    Job Description


    In this role, under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, the Special Procedures Nurse for Infusion Therapy provides technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients undergoing infusion therapy. This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and recovery phase. The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for his/her assigned unit.



    • Represent the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) in a positive, professional manner; interact effectively with a diverse group of patients, families, faculty, staff, and the other customers we serve.
    • Handle confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
    • Accurately complete required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possess sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognize patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiate appropriate life-supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
    • Perform all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCM.
    • Maintain required nursing specific competencies needed to provide proficient nursing care. Administering high-risk infusion and transfusion (i.e. chemotherapy medicines).
    • Contribute to the Patient Services Sector/Outpatient Services Sector offering constructive suggestions for change and participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new and existing programs utilizing evidence-based practice.
    • Utilize nursing knowledge to anticipate and plan for patient care needs. Understand and apply safety principles and serve as a resource to other healthcare personnel on patient care. Know the potential risks and complications from specialty procedures and assist in the initial treatment of adverse effects in area of expertise. 

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
    • Must have a minimum of three years' experience working in a multi-specialty clinic setting as a Registered Nurse.
    • Must demonstrate competency with chemotherapeutic infusions.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • ONS Biotherapy Certified preferred and will be required upon hire.
