    Systems Engineer- Senior (Enterprise Systems)


    Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine.  The Information Systems (CBIS) Department currently seeks a Senior Systems Engineer to assist with all activities related to system administration. 


    Job Summary


    In this role, the Systems Engineer, Senior helps administers day-to-day operations of key system environment(s).  In addition, will:

    • Assist in the design, administration, analysis, evaluation, troubleshooting, and documenting of complex existing technology systems (e.g., technical platforms, e-mail systems, network operating systems, etc.)
    • Assists with more complex testing and analysis of all elements of the systems’ capabilities
    • Understands the business impact of events and decisions made relating to system changes/enhancements
    • Helps make decisions and determine policy to maximize system availability 

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities 


    Systems Administration: 

    • Responsible for all activities related to system administration
    • Analyzes causes of issues, delays, or problems and takes necessary corrective action to alleviate problem areas
    • Ensures long-term requirements of systems operations and administration are included in the overall information systems planning of the organization
    • Responsible for the installation, maintenance, configuration, and integrity of systems software
    • Maintains and upgrades hardware and software including technical architecture related to hardware and basic network connectivity
    • Monitors and maintains continuity with system software licensing and maintenance agreements
    • Implements operating system enhancements that will improve the reliability and performance of the system
    • Establishes/recommends policies on system use and services
    • Responsible for design, support and implementation of Disaster Recovery and High Availability plans

    Specialized administration of at least one of the following areas:


    Windows Administration:

    • Sets up and maintains all Windows enterprise systems within the enterprise. Specific tasks include: setup and maintenance of new systems, implementing network connectivity, performing routine backups, performing system recovery when there are problems, securing systems against unauthorized access from entities both from within and without the University, understanding the needs of the enterprise, recommending specific solutions, and in developing long range strategies to accommodate the continued growth of the department 

    Technical Project Coordination: 

    • Provide assistance to the Manager in ongoing project audit and task review
    • Provide project coordination and lead technical expertise for information technology initiatives

    ‚ÄčEscalation point for support requests: 

    • Third (3rd) tier support resource for any and all technical support requests generated within the division. Coordinate resources, and act as the primary focal point for the customer during the problem resolution process 

    Required Qualification

    • BS or BA degree, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education, training or work experience
    • Five (5) or more years Programming or System Administration experience
    • Skilled and experienced with any or all of the following hardware/virtualization:

    o   HP DL Series, Cisco UCS Blades, HP Blade Series, VMware 5.5 or higher

    • Detailed understanding of performance and tuning not limited to memory and storage
    • Extensive experience writing and understanding complex scripts in many administrative languages:

    o   Korn, Bourne, C shell, Perl, Sed, Awk, etc

    • Independent problem-solver. Sorts through issues and conducts comparative analysis of multiple solutions (i.e. skilled in problem analysis; pays very close attention to detail)
    • Able to work in a team environment or independently
    • Excellent listening and organizational skills with emphasis on detail and follow-through
    • Able to organize and delegate tasks, coordinate projects and be willing to advise others
    • Skilled in project management and work plan development and implementation
    • Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
    • Detailed understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts

    Experience with one of the following required:

    • Skilled and experienced with Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2008
    • Skills and experience with any of the following are a plus

    o   Exchange 2010, Citrix XenApp 6.5 or 7.x, VMware, SCCM, Azure, Automation and Orchestration, (Ancible, Puppet, DSC, etc)  Active Directory.

    • Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes
    • Group Policy
    • Good understanding of Windows-based operating systems
    • Ability to write and understand scripts in Powershell
